The Academy Awards, better known as Oscar, is the most important film awards in the world. The awards are conferred by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, an organization made up of very important people who have pursued their careers in film, as actors, directors, producers and many others.
The official name of the golden statue is Academy Award of Merit, while there are several versions of how the nickname was created Oscar : according to the most reliable, born of a 'exclaimed Margaret Herrick, who worked at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which saw the statuette on a table, said: "It looks like just my uncle Oscar." The current president of the Academy is, by 2009, Tom Sherak.
